"Take a Good Look, Because Its the Last Time You'll Be Seeing These"

I got to take the Madone out for a quick spin today after work. I only road for about 15 miles because I don't really know any good road routes and I am planning to do a lot of riding the next couple of days. I really like the bike. It handles well and is a comfortable ride. It is also really stiff and can accelerate about like Ethan's Tarmac, which I like. I am not going to go on too much about the bike because I am kind of disappointed at the moment. Upon arriving home, I went to put the away and noticed a chip in the back of the seat tube. The finish is chipped completely off but I can not tell if there is any damage to the carbon that would compromise the integrity of the frame. I am planning to take it in tomorrow and have a mechanic look at it. I don't know much about carbon frames so it may be fine but it certainly doesn't inspire confidence. Needless to say, I am kind of bummed. Hopefully the only damage is cosmetic. I am not sure what would have caused the chip. It isn't really in a good spot to have a rock kicked up from the tire (unless I was going backwards, which I don't remember doing) and I wasn't riding any really rough roads. For those curious, I did two loops around the bike route that goes by Kent Road which shouldn't have caused any problems. I guess I will see what the deal is tomorrow. Anyway here are some pictures of the bike.

The bike.

Also made in God's Country.

How exotic.

The good stuff, I guess.

An attempt to photograph the damage.

I feel worse than this guy. At least he got a cookie.

This bike is weird. First the tire blows under suspicious circumstances, then you find a chip in the seat tube. What were the guys at the shop doing with this bike?

The good news is that if the chip hasn't compromised the integrity of the frame, you should be able to get some touch up paint in just the right color. Specialized offers these paints on their website. I didn't find any on Trek's website, but it should be possible to get some. I did notice that Trek's warranty covers the paint, as well as any defects not due to misuse, for the first year.

So either it's superficial damage, in which case a little touch-up paint and you can forget about it, or Trek would have to replace the frame for free. Either way the sweet deal you got makes it worth your time and trouble to see this through.

No rock would cause that kind of nick. It looks to me from the picture as if it's just cosmetic, but the picture's a little blurry, so I could be wrong. If you can't get any touch-up paint from Trek, the thing to do, believe it or not, is to get some nail polish. I believe I read that in my owner's manual. You should be able to match the color fairly well, since they have so many to choose from.

I think the bike is still a very good one; I'd just keep it away from the people at cycle spoken here as much as possible.

Yeah I think that the damage is just cosmetic but I am going to go ahead and assume the worst. I am not really familiar enough with carbon frames to know if there is any real damage or not. Maybe if it is damaged I'll get super lucky and they will send me one of the new Madones. Now that would be a sweet deal.
